Turning Point—1933

… the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

— FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT, INAUGURAL ADDRESS

Roosevelt became president promising hope and a way out of the economic chaos of the Depression. Elsewhere things were not so optimistic.

The Nazi anthem, heard everywhere after 1933, was called the Horst Wessel Song.

Horst Wessel was a young Nazi who was killed in 1930 and held up as a martyr. In fact, he was shot in a Berlin apartment by a Communist as part of what was probably a squabble over prostitutes. The landlady tried to get a doctor to tend to the seriously wounded Wessel, but another Nazi refused to let the doctor in because he was Jewish. Wessel’s friend said it would be better for the 22-year-old Nazi to die than be treated by a Jew. Six weeks later Wessel did die from his wound, and was turned into a hero.
